Relief Prints
Relief prints are made from wood or special linoleum which has had the image cut into it using gouges. I also use exacto knives. Linocuts are similar to woodcuts in technique, but the linoleum is much softer to cut. A woodgrain texture is characteristic of woodcuts.
For relief prints only the top surface is inked to produce the image. The ink is applied using a roller or brayer. Paper is placed on top of the inked surface and pressure is applied to transfer the ink. Reliefs can be printed in a press, or by hand by rubbing the back of the paper with the back of a wooden spoon. More color can be added with hand-coloring, chine collé, or additonal blocks.
